Click "see the artwork" to view 90 tapestries of participating artists from 15 countries. Historical Note Whenever I begin a new project, I'm faced with the question, "how can I open the door so that others can see what's in my heart?" Grief. Sorrow. Honor. These words mean more to me than anyone can imagine. They are now motivating me to embark on the biggest project I've ever tried. Because I have survived where friends and relatives have not, I want to pay tribute. I want to honor. And because this feeling is so big, I cannot hold it to myself. I want to include those who feel as I do, to make something greater than all of us. As whenever something which affects all humanity happens, the events of September 11, 2001 made many people ask themselves, "What can I do to help heal the wounds and make us whole?" Answers to that kind of question are usually best answered by the way in which each person's unique individuality is expressed in society. So, in the tapestry art community, the idea came to have a "mosaic" tapestry comprised of small tapestries contributed by tapestry artists from around the world. Purpose To honor those whose lives were affected by September 11. Proposal Tapestry artists from all nations were invited to contribute a tapestry of their own design that speaks from their heart on the subject. The tapestries were stiched to the black background by the project manager in a way that keeps the designs distinct, yet harmonious. In this way, the collective "whole" is more effective and powerful in its healing mission than "the sum of its parts." A catalog of all the original works with a brief statement by each artist will be printed and made available for sale wherever the tapestry is hung. Arts magazines (FiberForum, Textile, Crafts Report, Artichoke and Fiber Focus) included a story about the project.
