The commission
of this monumental artwork resulted from a competition held among Michigan
artists. It depicts numerous landmarks in Bay City. Incorporated into the
tapestry are some of Bay City's oldest buildings, such as the City Hall
where the tapestry is hung, as well as modern ones - a contemporary office
building and shopping complex. Also two domes of the Masonic Temple that
were destroyed by fire have been restored in wool (by way of this tapestry).
It took
one year, nearly 100 pounds of wool hand-dyed in almost 500 shades of rust,
yellow, green and brown; and impressive amounts of silk, flax and tied ropes
to complete this 30 by 8 foot irregular-shaped tapestry.
