The tapestry "Fire on the Mountain" (34.5 by 18 inch)was inspired by the Cerro Grande (Los Alamos) fire of May 2000. I was not only horrified by the fire, but also fascinated with it. I was raised where wildfires are common, and am familiar with their dual nature. I got the idea to make the fire as beautiful as I could by watching everyone in Santa Fe watching the fire. It was impossible to drive around town without having your eyes glued to the Jemez Mountains. It was, quite frankly, awesome. We all worried about our Los Alamos friends and the harm to the wildlife, but could still marvel at the entire scene. Fire, in and of itself, is beautiful. My goal was to depict only that element of the fire.
